One of the most wonderful gardening pleasures is building and filling a hanging planter box. When carefully curated, they add visual depth and curb appeal to any house. But why should planter boxes be relegated to just windows?

On TikTok this week, sustainable stylist Sarah Teresinski (@redeux_style) shared her favorite hack for hanging flowers on a fence. When clustered together, the effect is that of a hanging flower box. Here’s how Teresinski created this hanging plant hack, making use of one unexpected home-organizing item.

How to Hang Flower Baskets from a Fence

In the video, Teresinski shows off her favorite closet storage items: over-the-door hanging hooks!  “Hooks that fit on the back of closet doors work perfectly to hang plants on your fence for the summer,” she explains.

Teresinski hangs both long closet hangers that have multiple hooks and single decorative hooks over her fence, then threads the handles of her flower baskets on them. She says she likes using cheap, Dollar Store varieties of closet hangers, as their hooks bend easily to accommodate the baskets.

To hang storage baskets with handles, she simply slips the handle onto the hook, then adds her flowers. For baskets without handles, she says you can use a zip tie to secure them. The closet hanging hooks easily support the weight of multiple flower baskets.

If you’d like to try this hack for yourself, you can select a color that matches your outdoor decor. With just a tiny bit of effort, your outdoor space is instantly enlivened and brightened!
