Tool Rental Coming to Lowe’s

Updated: Sep. 26, 2022

Why buy expensive tools when you can rent? Check out Lowe's new tool rental program that will kick-start even your most challenging DIY projects.

Anything is possible with the right tools! And soon you can rent whatever tool your job requires from Lowe’s.

The home improvement retailer just announced a new tool rental program that will roll out nationwide over the next few years. For now, it’s available only at the Central Charlotte Lowe’s in North Carolina (located on Iverson Way). Lowe’s Tool Rental will be a whole department of newly-constructed space within an existing Lowe’s store or next to it.

Here’s everything you need to know to take advantage of the new program and save money on tools.

Which Tools Will Be Available to Rent?

According to Lowe’s, the tool rental department will have a wide range of drain cleaning, restoration, sanitation and concrete tools with brand names such as Husqvarna, Bosch and Metabo HPT. At the Charlotte store we found pressure washers, augers, carpet cleaners, nail guns, trenchers, paint sprayers and more. Whatever project you choose, Lowe’s Tool Rental is likely to carry what you need.

These are the tools you should rent vs. buy.

How Do I Rent a Tool from Lowe’s?

You can select a tool, confirm your rental dates and make a reservation either online or in the store via self-service kiosks. When it’s time to pick up the tool, bring a valid ID and credit card. Keep in mind none of this is available until tool rental comes to your local store, and Lowe’s has not announced which stores will be getting the new department.

How Much Does Lowe’s Tool Rental Cost?

The cost to rent a tool at Lowe’s depends on what you’re renting and for how long you’ll need it. Available rental periods range from as short as four hours to as long as four weeks. On average, most tools can be rented from about $25 to $65 per day.

Some of the most expensive tools available at the North Carolina store are the towable stump grinder, which rents for $138 per day, and the 30-in. trencher at $171 per day. For smaller tools, a cordless nail gun will run you $36 per day or $144 per week, and a 14-in. chainsaw at $43 per day or $172 per week.

What Precautions Are Being Taken During the Pandemic?

According to Lowe’s, rental tools will be sanitized thoroughly before and after each use. They’re also prioritizing safety by offering curbside pickup and drop-off. Just pull into one of the marked curbside spaces in front of the store and follow the instructions on the signage.
