What to Look for When Creating a Private Backyard Retreat

“Think about how you want to use your yard,” says Lisa Stryker, spokesperson for the National Association of Landscape Professionals. “Is it a play area for children and pets, an entertaining space or a quiet place to enjoy the mental and physical benefits of being outside? Or is it more than one of those things? Or is it more than one of those things? It’s good to plan out your vision for your backyard, even if you can’t accomplish it all at once,” she adds.

Stryker explains that if your primary goal is play spaces, you want a nice lawn or ground cover for children and pets. If you want an entertaining space, “then you want to create plans for a patio or deck that can range in budget from smaller with a portable grill, firepit and outdoor furniture to a more elaborate setup with a patio with a built-in kitchen and fireplace.”

How to Turn Your Backyard Into a Retreat

“The word retreat suggests private cozy spaces, so consider creating comfortable shaded seating areas (think umbrellas, trellis, pergolas or areas under a tree).” Stryker explains. “If you want to spend time outside at night, think about adding lanterns, string lights, or fire features.  If water is relaxing to you, add a portable fountain or small pond.”

How to create a relaxing backyard

The best step to creating a relaxing backyard is to start by clearing away clutter and debris. Then, add comfortable seating and proper landscaping.

What items should you use to create a backyard retreat?

Stryker explains that if you plan to spend a lot of time outside, consider shade and privacy. “Consider adding perimeter trees or shrubs for privacy, trees to cool the backyard and plants that match your style, like a small flower or rose garden or an herb or vegetable garden. Make sure you have comfortable seating to enjoy the yard,” she adds.

What is the best mulch or plants to use?

First and foremost, think about your climate zone when selecting plants. “Choose plants that are well adapted to your local climate as they’ll need less maintenance, and they’ll thrive in your climate zone,” Stryker shares. “Choose lower water use plants and make sure to place plants in the correct areas (full sun, partial shade and full shade). Use enough natural mulch to help the plants retain moisture, but don’t create ‘mulch volcanoes’ that rise high up on trees and touch the tree trunks.”
