Kondo started her career as a tidying expert at the age of 19 and has turned her love of organization into a hit Netflix show, wildly successful books, TV show appearances and the KonMari lifestyle brand of products and services. Kondo has sold more than 11 million books in 40 languages including her New York Times #1 New York Times bestselling book “The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up,” according to The Wall Street Journal.
What it takes to be a Marie Kondo Consultant
Kondo, who was named one of Time magazine’s 100 most influential people, decided to create her own army of tidying experts through the KonMari Consultants training program, which she launched in 2016.
People in need of help can find local KonMari consultants in a database on her website and hire them to declutter their homes. Consultants are trained in the KonMari Method and certified through a seven-step consultant training program.
Seven steps to becoming a decluttering expert
The first step to becoming a KonMari Method consultant is to read two Marie Kondo books, “The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up” and “Spark Joy.” Then you must tidy up your own home and submit photos for verification. Potential consultants must then secure a spot for a consultant certification course. Registration for the Spring 2019 Consultant Certification Course was completely sold out. Money.com reports that these courses can cost between $2,220 and $2,400 to attend.
The course required for certification delves deeper into the KonMari Method and things like how to constructively guide clients without judgment. But completing the course doesn’t guarantee you’ll be accepted as a consultant. You will also have to join an online community via Facebook groups and interact with fellow consultants and consultants-in-training.
Next, tidying reports for 10 practice sessions, that take up a total of 30 hours in the homes of two separate clients, must be submitted. The sixth step is taking and passing an exam. You can finally apply for certification after that and will be approved if all requirements are successfully fulfilled. Then you sign a contract and pay an annual $500 membership fee. Working as a KonMari Consultant
Consultants are ranked on the KonMari website by their certification level, which is based on how many clients they’ve seen and how many hours they’ve spent tidying. There are currently more than 248 certified consultants in the database. Five of them are at the highest level as certified masters, nine are platinum, 17 are gold, 39 are silver, 53 are bronze and 125 of them are green level consultants.
