Does Costco Own Kirkland’s Home Decor Stores?

Kirkland Signature, Kirkland's and Costco—three names in the retail realm that sometimes get bundled together. But one of them is not like the others!

Kirkland Signature, the private label brand name introduced by Costco in 1992, is so named after Costco’s corporate headquarters, Kirkland, Washington. Costco uses the Kirkland Signature brand on clothing and food, sporting goods, beauty products, paper goods, supplements and organic products like grass-fed beef and wild-caught salmon.

Kirkland’s, Inc. on the other hand, is a U. S. retail chain that sells home decor, furniture, textiles, accessories and gifts. There are 434 stores in 37 states as well as an e-commerce website. Kirkland’s was founded by Carl Kirkland in 1966 in Jackson, Tennessee.

“In 1966, Carl opened a franchised gift shop in Old Hickory Mall in Jackson, TN where he perfected his ability to find and merchandise stylish items at even more stylish prices. At about the same time, Carl’s cousin, Robert Kirkland, did the same in Nashville, TN,” notes Kirkland’s website.

While some home decor trends stand the test of time, others come and go in a blink. Here are 11 trends you’ll want to consider right now.

By the late 1970s, the two cousins began traveling abroad to find one-of-a-kind pieces to sell back home. Eventually, Kirkland’s evolved from a gift shop to a budget-friendly home accessories store “with a single belief in mind: great style can come at a great price—always.”

Kirkland’s has since become a leading home retailer of decor and gifts, with $608 million in sales in fiscal 2017. So, despite not being a part of Costco, Kirkland’s has 8,000 employees and 9, 000012,000 active products across web and brick-and-mortar store channels.
