You Need This Easy DIY Spray to Keep Spiders Out of Your House

Updated: Apr. 27, 2023

Spiders begone! Use this simple DIY spider spray to keep the critters out of your home.

Spiders are around all year round, but you may notice more arachnids during specific times of the year. According to the Burke Museum at the University of Washington, over 70 common spiders reach maturity between April and June, making these months the peak time for spiders to wander into your home.

So why do spiders wander into your home? Per Terminix, in most cases, common house spiders are unknowingly in your home throughout the year and are often born under your roof. Often, spiders enter your home in search of a mate, and from there, they may take up residency.

Whatever the reason for their presence, you’ll want to know how to keep spiders out of your house. But hold off on calling the exterminator or buying that expensive, brand-name repellent, because a simple homemade recipe will get rid of spiders with minimal effort needed.

How Can I Keep Spiders Out of My House?

An easy hack from TikToker Ceith Griffith (@ceithgriffith) is a cost-effective choice—a combination of water and cayenne pepper made into a natural spray. Once you’ve made the spray, you’ll use it to spray the perimeter of your windows. You may also want to use it around your front and patio doors.

Cayenne pepper works well as a spider repellent because of its natural chemical compound capsaicin, which is recognized by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA) as a biochemical pesticide (meaning it is a naturally occurring chemical with a non-toxic mode of action). Due to its irritant qualities, capsaicin is a natural repellent for arachnids, insects and other animals.

How to Make DIY Spider Spray

You’ll need just two ingredients and a spray bottle to make the DIY spider spray. If you don’t have a spray bottle handy, you can use a soup ladle to distribute small amounts of the solution, but this application won’t be as even as using a spray bottle.

Directions

The video recommends a 10-ounce water bottle and two tablespoons of cayenne pepper, but you can adjust the ratio to your needs. Add the cayenne pepper to the water and twist the lid back on. Then, shake the bottle until the spice is well combined and transfer the contents to your spray bottle. Now you’re ready to start spraying and enjoying your spider-free home.
