9 Above Ground Pool Deck Ideas

Above-ground pools are traditionally considered a budget-friendly pool option that can be a bit of an eyesore in the backyard. But times have changed! Homeowners are using cleverly designed pool decks to elevate the look of their above-ground pools. The right deck can make all the difference — hiding the exposed sides of the pool, creating lounge areas, and making the entire pool area more aesthetically pleasing.

We spoke to Jake Johnson, owner of Stone Ridge Decking, for more insight on what makes a successful above-ground pool deck. Up ahead, check out some of our favorite examples to help inspire your own above-ground pool transformation.

Do Above-Ground Pools Need a Deck?

You can have an above-ground pool without a deck, but it won’t look all that pleasing to the eye. But building a deck around an ordinary above-ground pool transforms the look entirely.

“Above-ground pools offer numerous advantages over in-ground ones, including affordability, quick installation, flexibility of location, and easier maintenance. However, they often lack aesthetic appeal,” says Johnson. “This issue can be resolved with a well-designed above-ground pool deck. Additionally, since the pool is already elevated, standard deck railings can provide adequate safety without obstructing views.”

If you are a parent, you may also want to consider an above-ground pool deck for safety reasons since it can improve visibility and accessibility to the pool.

Do Above Ground Pool Decks Increase Home Value?

The more attractive and permanent your above-ground pool looks, the more positive effect it will have on home value.

“An above-ground pool without a deck can seem unattractive and impractical. Feedback from our customers suggests that adding a deck can transform a pool from seldom-used to a focal point of summer activities,” says Johnson. “Incorporating a deck can significantly enhance the perceived value of the property for potential buyers for a fraction of the cost compared to an in-ground pool.”

Luxury Above-Ground Pool Deck

It’s hard to believe this backyard oasis is technically an above-ground pool. The pool deck from @stone.ridge.decking helps incorporate the pool into the sloped yard, creating the illusion of an in-ground pool and elevating the entire design. The spacious deck also includes lighting, a pergola and several seating areas.

What We Like About It: “Avoid enclosing the entire pool area, as this can lead to unused and disproportionately costly spaces,” says Johnson. “Leaving an open edge toward the best view can create a more inviting atmosphere.”

Above-ground pools are often freestanding structures. But this plunge pool and deck from @allcastplungepools is attached to the back porch, creating a convenient entry to the pool while also helping to integrate the pool into the overall outdoor design. Glass fencing creates a safety barrier without blocking the beautiful view.

What We Like About It: The attractive pool siding and sleek deck create a surprisingly modern design, which above-ground pools are not typically known for.

Small Above-Ground Pool Deck

Even the smallest above-ground pool (in this case, a tank pool from @tipsytankpools) can be improved with a pool deck. The small deck surrounds the pool for comfortable seating and has a built-in wall for privacy. Thanks to the thoughtful deck design, what could be an underwhelming tank pool is now a relaxing retreat.

What We Like About It: The semicircle style of the deck helps the tank pool look like a more permanent fixture in the outdoor space.

Corner Above-Ground Pool Deck

If your above ground pool is located in an awkward corner of the yard, a deck can help it look more intentional. This pool and deck from @villaplungepools fits snugly in the back corner thanks to the unique triangle shape of the deck—a great example of how you can use custom decking to alter the shape of the pool to better fit your yard.

What We Like About It: Even though there isn’t a lot of square footage to this deck, it makes a huge impact on the style and function of the pool.

The three different levels lead up to a shaded sitting area, and help the pool blend into the surroundings of the yard. The durable composite decking by TimberTech is a smart choice, giving you the look of wood but without the annoying maintenance.

What We Like About It: “By installing manufactured and warrantied deck boards, you can eliminate concerns such as cracked concrete, hard to access plumbing issues, and stains,” says Johnson.

What We Like About It: When it comes to deck stairs, wider is better. “Opt for wider stairs (6 to 8-ft.) to improve accessibility and make the pool area more inviting,” says Johnson.

Sitting Above-Ground Pool Deck

Make use of a small side yard with an above ground pool and surrounding deck for sitting, like this example from @staycation.house. This bench deck completely encases the pool so swimmers can perch on the side of the pool, or lean back while inside the pool. The deck also hides the unattractive pool siding for a more finished look.

What We Like About It: The pool and surrounding deck changes an afterthought of a side yard into a usable and serene space.
