Paint Your Trim Like a Pro with This No-Mess Hack

Updated: Jan. 29, 2024

You'll never want to use painter's tape again!

Painting interior trim and baseboards can be finicky, time-consuming and stressful. The trim paint can easily get on the walls, making for a frustrating touchup process. And while using blue painter’s tape can protect the walls, it also requires precise measurements and still doesn’t always catch all the drips. Fortunately, there’s a better way to paint a baseboard—in his viral TikTok video, contractor More Strong (@fabianmendozared) shows you how!

What Is the Easiest Way to Paint Baseboards?

Save yourself time and energy by using a drywall scraper to paint your baseboards. In the video below, More Strong simply holds the flat edge of a drywall scraper against the top of the baseboard using one hand, using the other hand to hold their paintbrush. Then, they move both at the same time down the baseboard, so that the paintbrush always touches the drywall scraper. The drywall scraper stays along the baseboard, preventing any paint from straying onto the walls—no tape needed!

Keep in mind that this creator seems to be painting the baseboards on the bare floor of a partially constructed house, so he hasn’t put anything down to catch the paint. You might want to consider a dropcloth to protect your floor as well!

More Baseboard Painting Tips

To get the most out of the baseboard painting hack, be sure to invest in a wide drywall scraper. The longer the scraper is, the less likely the brush is to slip off the edge and onto the wall. Additionally, this painting hack only covers the very top edge of the baseboard, so be sure to go back over the bottom half of the baseboard without the drywall scraper. Finally, make sure you’re using the right trim paint and that you have properly prepared your wooden trim before painting.
