While the percentage of women in construction jobs is growing, they’re still in the minority. “It is critical to support the growing number of females in these fields with equipment that is designed for them—to provide the fit and function that will allow them to perform at their best,” says Kate Harrison, the Manager of Biomechanics Research, Performance Fit Lab at BOA Technology.

According to a study in the Journal of the American Podiatric Medical Association, “Female feet differ in size and shape from male feet and are not algebraically scaled, smaller versions of male feet, as is often assumed.” In addition to being relatively narrower and shorter than men’s feet, women’s feet also vary at the arch, lateral side of the foot, first toe and ball of the foot. You should consider boots specifically made for a woman’s foot when looking for a great-fitting woman’s work boot.

What to Consider When Buying Women’s Work Boots

  • Secure fit: A loose-fitting boot can cause discomfort in the moment and more issues over time. “Make sure you can get a firm all-around fit, without pressure points that might cause pain,” Harrison says. “Check to see if you feel your heel lifting as you walk—if your foot is held firmly against the sole of the shoe, this is a sign of a well-fitting boot.”
  • Ankle support: Harrison advises prioritizing proper ankle support, particularly if you work outdoors. “Make sure the cuff of the boot—wrapping around your shin—is nice and snug, and the construction of the boot is rigid enough to provide you support,” she says. “This will help you maintain balance and stability on varying and unpredictable surfaces.”
  • Safety: It’s important that you have the right boots for the job. “Compared to a regular boot, work boots are designed to protect feet from impact and other hazards,” Harrison says. Choosing boots with safety toes can be key depending on your working needs and environment. The most common safety toes on the market are aluminum, composite and steel.
  • Cushion and thickness: Even on warmer days, you’ll want a pair of supportive work boots and socks. The right cushioning and support will give your feet relief on those long days on the job.
  • Waterproof capabilities: When working outdoors or in wet climates, moisture can collect inside your boots. To avoid this, consider buying waterproof boots so that your feet stay dry. “The only drawback to a weatherproof boot is that materials used for waterproofing and moisture wicking are sometimes less breathable and retain warmth, which may not be ideal in the summer season or warmer climates,” Harrison says.
