The Family Handyman
Here’s a slick way, courtesy of reader Joseph Cuetara, to keep those paper towels just a grab away at the workbench. You’ll need 12-in. lengths of 1-1/4 in. and 3/8-in. diameter dowel rod—and a workbench you don’t mind drilling holes in! Drill a 1-1/4 in. hole in the corner of the table top, stopping it about 1/8 in. from the bottom. Push in the large dowel, securing it from beneath with a washer and screw. Then put on a towel roll and drill a 3/8-in. hole for the smaller dowel at the towel’s outer circumference. The skinny dowel lets you tear off towels one-handed. Now just tap in the 3/8-in. dowel and you’re ready to roll when spills or splatters need tending. When you’re done, pull out the dowels and put them away until next time.
