Here’s a sure way to avoid zillions of one-item shopping trips. Use a 1/4-in. dia. bit to drill holes an inch apart along the entire length of each side of a 10- to 12-in. wide board and position it near your shop’s door. Brainstorm a list of most-likely-to-run-out shop necessities, like:

  • sandpaper
  • paint
  • screws
  • drill bits
  • fluorescent bulbs
  • wood filler
  • mineral spirits
  • scroll saw blades
  • wood glue
  • coffee!

Write the name of each item on an adhesive-backed computer or address label. Label each hole, and whenever you’re working in the shop and notice you’re almost out of an item, insert a golf tee by the appropriate label. Before your next trip to the store, check the board and you’ll have a reminder of those perpetually needed supplies. Thanks to faithful reader R. B. Himes for teeing up another good tip.
