Seat-of-the-Pants Marking Gauge

Need a marking gauge but don’t own one? Grab that dusty old clipboard and clamp a ruler under the clip so the ruler projects the distance you want to mark.

The Family Handyman

Need a marking gauge but don’t own one? Grab that dusty old clipboard and clamp a ruler under the clip so the ruler projects the distance you want to mark. Then run the clipboard edge against the board you’re marking while holding a pencil against the end of the ruler. You’ll trace a perfectly straight line exactly where you need it. Our thanks to Mary Flanagan for this straight-up fine tip.
