Pre-Saw Before You Re-Saw

Travis shares a tip for slicing thick boards into thinner boards.

Family Handyman

The other day, I was “re-sawing,” that is, slicing thicker boards into thinner ones on the band saw. But no matter how careful I tried to be, I couldn’t get the blade to stop wandering, rewarding me with two boards of wildly irregular surfaces. Then I remembered this old trick. First send one edge of the board through the table saw, cutting about 1 in. deep. Turn it end for end and cut another kerf on the opposite edge, and then send it through the band saw. The saw kerfs will act as guides to keep the blade in line. Move to the planer for the final smoothing. — Travis Larson
