The Family Handyman
Here’s a guaranteed method for creating a perfectly matched butt seam between two pieces of plastic laminate, courtesy of reader Patrick Helf. All you need is a router, a 1/2-in. straight carbide bit, a router-fence board, a flat surface you don’t mind cutting a shallow groove in, and some clamps.
Line up the two laminate edges in a straight line and clamp them on the sacrificial surface with a 1/4-in. space between them. Firmly clamp the fence board parallel to the seam so the bit rides down the middle of the 1/4-in. gap. Take a shallow pass and you’re done. Don’t worry if the fence board isn’t absolutely straight— the two edges of the laminate will match perfectly when you cement them to the countertop with contact cement
