This handy hint is perfect for woodworking projects with dowel joints: Drive a finish nail about halfway into the wood wherever your want a dowel. Clip the head off of the nail, so only about 1/4 in. is left sticking out. Then press the mating piece firmly against the nails to leave marks where you need to drill holes for the dowels. Use pliers to pull out the nails and drill the holes. Unlike when using dowel centers, you can use this technique for any size of dowel.
