Protect fingertips from hammer blows when you’re tapping in those little brads. Apply a couple of layers of masking tape along the nailing line, and then press the brads into the tape to start them. The tape—instead of your fingers—holds the nails for hammering and also shields the wood from dents and dings as you tap in the nails. You can also mark the tape for exact nail spacing before driving in the nails. Thanks to reader Jim Thomas for nailing down this tip.
