Pleated filters are a much better alternative to the giant dust bags sported by most dust collectors. They filter out the tiny dust particles missed by most bags and take up less room. And they’re easier to clean.
You can simply hose down the outside of the filter with compressed air—no removal necessary. You can buy new dust collectors with filters, and some manufacturers offer filter systems to replace bags on older models. Check out oneidaair.com and pennstateind.com. ‘
Dick Wynn of Wynn Environmental sent me this pleated industrial-grade filter to try out. Cheapskate that I am, I made this freebie fit my old collector by cobbling together this adapter to fit the old collar. Chances are, you won’t have to rig up a filter like I did—Dick says he has one to fit nearly any collector. He also says the filters only take about 15 minutes to install. Check them out at wynnenv.com. The filters range in price from $106 to $165. — Travis Larson
