A jigsaw is a power saw with a short blade used to make straight, curved and bevel cuts in materials.

Parts of a Jigsaw

The main components of a jigsaw are the handle, blade, base, speed-control switch and orbital adjustment switch.

The handle guides the jigsaw and also includes the power trigger and a lock-on button. The base is placed on top of the material to help control and guide the saw as it cuts. The speed-control switch adjusts the speed of the blade, and the orbital-adjustment switch controls the precision of the blade.

Jigsaw Safety

Safety is important when handling a jigsaw. Always make sure the saw is unplugged when making any adjustments. It is also important to wear the appropriate safety equipment including eye, ear and respiratory protection.

Adjusting the Jigsaw Base

To adjust the base for beveled cuts, release the lock and adjust the base to the left or right up to 45 degrees. Once the base is adjusted to the desired angle, re-secure the base lock.

Changing a Jigsaw Blade

It’s important to use a sharp blade when cutting with the jigsaw. To remove the blade, rotate the blade support roller and then pull the blade out. To insert a new blade, rotate the blade support roller, insert a new blade with the teeth facing out, and release the blade support roller to secure the new blade.

Using a Jigsaw

Always ensure that your material is securely clamped to a work surface when cutting. Once the material is secure, place the base of the jigsaw on top of the material. The blade should be near the material but not touching it. Once the jigsaw is in place, press the trigger. Once it comes to full speed, gently guide the saw along the material as the blade cuts.
