When I started my own handyman business, I was making too many trips back to my house for tools and materials. So I built a big set of drawers running the full length of my truck bed. It’s mostly a collection of plywood boxes-not hard to build. Here are some building tips:
Details & tips:
- The drawer bottoms are raised about ¼ in., so the drawer sides act as runners. Wax the runners with a candle and they’ll glide easily, even when they’re loaded with 100 lbs. of tools.
- The drawer fronts are made from 2x8s rather than ¾-in. plywood. Thicker material allows for a stronger connection to the sides, so you can pull hard on the drawers if you have to.
- To keep out water, a flap of outdoor carpet hangs over the drawer ends, and a rubber bed liner covers the whole assembly. Everything stays bone dry through rain and snow, but car washes have led to a few small leaks.
