Mate Hose Ends for Storage
Apparently, an empty garden hose makes a cozy home for various critters. Mine has housed a snake and a frog, but most frequently it has hosted ants. Too many times I’ve hooked up my oscillating sprinkler, only to have it immediately plugged with ants. I finally learned my lesson. In the fall, I drain the hoses and mate the ends before storing them for the winter. If I forget to mate the ends, or if I haven’t used the hose for a while in the summer, I make sure to run water through the hose before connecting it to the sprinkler. — Travis Larson
