Easy-to-Build DIY Mail Organizer
Repurpose an out-of-date accordion closet door and turn it into a central command center for your home. No more piles of mail on the countertop!
After a recent bathroom remodel, this closet door was awaiting the dumpster. But a little elbow grease and some out-of-the-box thinking turns this discarded door into a cool-looking, functional piece of home furniture.

Do the Dirty Work
Prep for Painting
Remove the hardware from the door and give it a good sanding. Remove a few of the shutter slats with the back-end of a hammer and a little wiggling. This will leave space to drape magazines at the bottom organizer.
Add Some Color
Spray Paint with Light Passes
Spray paint the door (we used Rust-oleum Ultra Cover in Satin Stone Grey). Though you could paint with a brush, spray paint is easier to get into all the nooks and crannies. The key with this is to spray a few thin coats instead of one thick one.
Make it Functional
Add Hanging Hardware and Cardboard
Once the door paint is completely dry, flip it over onto a rug to avoid scratches and attach d-hook hanging mounts. (You could skip this step if you are just leaning the door against the wall.) Then hot glue some heavy cardboard to the backside of the shutters so mail doesn’t slip through.
Add Some Personality
Dress it Up
We attached some mismatched house numbers, and a couple nails to hold a printable calendar. This mail organizer is a central command station in the home, so it’s important to include space for a calendar. You could also add a spot for a to-do or grocery list or even use an old computer monitor for a digital display!
Add a Basket and Clothespins
We found this little wire basket that fit the organizer perfectly at a craft store, but you could also use a metal office file basket. Then glue a few painted clothespins below to hold important messages.
Hang and Enjoy!
Hang it on the wall and admire your hard work. Take pride in the fact that you turned something headed for a landfill into a useful piece of furniture you’ll use every day!
