Most LED bulbs need good airflow around them because heat buildup can greatly shorten their life span. That’s why most LEDs aren’t rated for enclosed fixtures. Any fixture with less than 1/2 in. of clearance around the bulb’s circumference is considered an enclosed fixture, even if it has an opening. So be sure you buy LED bulbs rated for use in an enclosed fixture. You’ll find the rating on the package. Available at home centers, these bulbs cost about the same as other LED bulbs.
