What to Look for When Choosing the Best Outdoor Christmas Decor
When you’re feeling ready to start decorating here are a few things to keep in mind when deciding on outdoor Christmas decor:
- Budget: Christmas decorations can get pricey, so nail down a budget before purchasing anything new. You’ll most likely be buying more than one piece of decor to achieve your desired look, so don’t forget to take that into account. “Making a home look festive and classy doesn’t have to cost the earth, and if budget is a factor it is worth considering the ‘CPC’ (cost per Christmas!) as although something may seem expensive as an initial outlay if you use it year after year then it brings down the cost per use – making those decorations a better investment,” says Yates.
- Colors/Theme: Once you have a budget, think about your Christmas decor theme and color scheme. It can be helpful to create a mood board so you know exactly which pieces you’re looking to buy. Yates says to think about what areas of your home already lend themselves to a certain type of decor, “Does your property have lots of trees you could utilize or a large porch and front door you could bring to life?”
- Reusable vs. One-Time Use: The majority of your Christmas decor should be re-used year after year. It’s more eco-friendly and allows specific items to hold sentimental value. Before decorating though, you should think about what items will be reusable (even when buying new pieces) versus only usable for one season.
- Electrical: “If using lighting, it’s also worth considering where power outlets are, and what cables would be required to facilitate your plans,” says Yates. “For those that can’t easily access power outside, lighting fitted to the inside of the windows with hooks can create the illusion they are on the outside, but lighting up the frames.”
- Weatherproofing: Since this decor lives outside, consider how it will hold up to the elements. Read the product’s care instructions and make sure that it can withstand the sun or the snow, ice and wind depending on what climate you live in.
