Reader Project: Old Barn-Wood Lumber, New Bed

To build this masterpiece, Scott Cheeseman salvaged lumber from a hayloft. Even after planing and sanding, the wood still had the character of age: a century of wear and tear, an amber glow and plenty of nail holes. It’s a look that carries a painful price tag at furniture galleries, but Scott’s barn-wood bed cost him only a few bucks—and a couple hundred hours of labor.

“I lucked out when my uncle tore down his 100-year-old barn. Great wood, free for the taking.” — Scott Cheeseman
