Reader Project: Backyard Stone Fireplace
It may look like the work of a veteran mason, but this backyard stone fireplace is John Golock’s first big masonry project.
It may look like the work of a veteran mason, but this fireplace is John Golock’s first big masonry project. It’s basically a concrete block shell, lined with firebrick inside and covered with manufactured fieldstone outside. The hearth and mantle are faced with manufactured flagstone. John cut some of that flagstone to make the matching bricks and keystone that form the fireplace arch. For easy fire-starting, John ran a gas line to the firebox and installed a log lighter under the grate (available at fireplace stores or online; search for “log lighter”).
“I kind of amazed myself with this one. Sometimes I look at it and think: Did I really build that?” — John Golock
