National Association of Home Builders Publishes Guide to Common Residential Code Questions

The 2018 International Residential Code is a comprehensive, all-encompassing book containing practically every rule and regulation pertaining to building homes. While that thoroughness makes the 2018 IRC an invaluable resource to contractors, it also makes the book a bit dense. Being 962 pages long means that the IRC has an answer to every question a home builder might have—if they have time to do some serious page flipping.
With that in mind, the International Code Council has partnered with the National Association of Home Builders to publish “2018 Home Builders’ Jobsite Codes: A Quick Guide to the 2018 International Residential Code.” The guide is meant serve as a more streamlined and portable version of the code, made specifically for quick consultation on the jobsite.
Described by the publisher as a “handy jobsite tool,” “2018 Home Builder’s’ Jobsite Codes” discusses the most impactful of the changes made to the code in 2018, including those regarding fire-resistant walls separating townhouses, emergency escape and rescue openings in basements, safety glazing adjacent to doors and bottom stair landings. The field guide also contains more than 100 illustrations, tables, and discussions on different areas of the 2018 IRC, such as foundations, fire safety, energy efficiency and more.
“2018 Home Builder’s Jobsite Codes” was written by Stephen A. Van Note, a certified building official and plans examiner with more than 15 years of experience in code administration and enforcement and over 20 years of experience in the construction field. Van Note has worked as a project planner and manager on the construction of residential, commercial, and industrial buildings, giving him a unique perspective on all aspects of the building code.
