It seems that even though the year is almost over, the slew of recall announcements is far from over. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) just released a recall alert about Ford vehicles where the liftgate may detach. While this isn’t the kind of problem that is likely to cause an engine fire or cause you to spin out, it’s still dangerous. Loose and detached liftgates can absolutely cause you or drivers on the road around you to crash.

According to the NHTSA, nearly 110,000 Ford vehicles have this problem, meaning that there are that many more potentially dangerous vehicles on the road right now. If you own one, you’ll need to get it repaired as soon as possible.

Why Is Ford Recalling Nearly 110,000 Vehicles?

Per the NHTSA, the Ford vehicles in question have faulty liftgates. The brief warns that “the liftgate hinge covers may not be properly secured and detach from the vehicle.” This is dangerous because “a detached liftgate hinge cover can create a distraction or a road hazard, increasing the risk of a crash.” Exercise caution while using your car until you know for sure that it’s safe.

Which Ford Vehicles Have a Liftgate That May Detach?

The report indicates that Ford is recalling nearly 110,000 vehicles, including the:

  • 2020 Escape
  • 2021 Escape
  • 2022 Escape
  • 2025 Escape

If you own any of these vehicles, keep an eye on your mailbox. Ford will be mailing out a first round of letters in mid-January 2026 to inform owners about the problem. Once they’ve rolled out the repair option, the company will send out a second round of letters. If you want to find out sooner, you can search your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) on the NHTSA site.

Is There a Fix Available?

According to the NHTSA brief, “dealers will inspect and reinstall, or replace any missing liftgate hinge covers as necessary, free of charge.” Once you get a letter notifying you that the repair is available, you should get your vehicle fixed right away. This may feel like a smaller issue compared to some of the other recalls that were announced this year, but faulty liftgates are still a crash hazard and the repairs are free. Therefore, there’s no reason to delay fixing the problem.
