Rear-View Camera Malfunction Triggers Major Recall of 140K+ Cars
Newer cars have all kinds of bells and whistles that seem like attractive additions. In most new cars, you can pair your phone, control many functions from a touchscreen, and benefit from safety features like rearview cameras. These cameras make backing up a breeze as they offer increased visibility to drivers. Unfortunately, new technology in cars means more things that can break or be recalled. Recently, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) released a report warning that hundreds of thousands of Hyundai vehicles have a rearview camera defect that makes them unsafe.
Why Is Hyundai Recalling So Many Vehicles?
According to the NHTSA brief, in hundreds of thousands of Hyundai vehicles, “the rearview camera may not have been installed properly, which can damage the wiring harness and cause the rearview camera image not to display.” This faulty installation means that the Hyundai vehicles in question “fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 111, ‘Rear Visibility.'”
While you can still look over your shoulder when reversing, having the camera adds an extra layer of safety by increasing visibility. The NHTSA warns that “a rearview image that does not display reduces the driver’s view behind the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.”
Which Hyundai Vehicles Have Defective Cameras?
Per the brief, over 140,000 Hyundai vehicles have this rearview camera defect, including the:
- 2024 Santa Fe
- 2025 Santa Fe
- 2024 Santa Fe Hybrid
- 2025 Santa Fe Hybrid
If you own one of these vehicles, keep an eye on your mailbox. Hyundai will mail out owner letters in mid-January of 2026. If you want to find out sooner, you can search the NHTSA site. As of November 22, 2025, Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) involved in this recall will accurately show whether or not they’re included in this recall.
How Will Hyundai Fix This Rearview Camera Defect?
Hyundai says that “dealers will replace the rearview camera and reposition the wiring harness, free of charge.” Once the fix is available, schedule your appointment at your earliest convenience. Yes, we survived without backup cameras for years. But as vehicles have gotten bigger and bigger, the new safety features have become more important. Until you can get your vehicle repaired, use extra caution when backing up.
