For Quick Measurements, Use a Finger-Guided Ruler

When you don’t need a perfectly straight line drawn on a piece (for a layout line or nailing line) all you need is a ruler or tape measure, a pencil and your two hands. This line will be pretty much perfectly straight. Start by marking your measurement like you would with any other project, but this time, lay the ruler on your piece the proper distance in. Next, hold the tape measure in your left hand (or right hand, depending on your preference) with your index finger against the edge of the piece. With your pencil against the tip of the ruler, slide both hands the length of the piece, using your other hand as a guide against the piece’s edge. As shown in the photo above, you can also do this tip without holding onto the ruler the whole time, just lie your index finger against the side of the piece, slide and draw.
