How to Fix a Square

Use a center punch, a hammer and an anvil to adjust the sides of the square. After a few good whacks, check your progress; repeat these steps as needed.

Have a square that isn’t, well, square? Don’t throw it out just yet, follow these steps to fix it. Note: This process doesn’t always work to fix a square, but it’s worth a shot before spending money on a new one.

Use a center punch, a hammer and an anvil to adjust the sides of the square. If the sides of are too close together, punch the inner corner of the square. If the sides are too far apart, punch the outer corner. After a few good whacks, check your progress; repeat these steps as needed until the square is square. It’s important to use an anvil, as it will not give under the pressure of hammering with a center punch. The intent is to move the metal outward, not downward, with each blow.
