Honda recently announced a recall due to potential wheel detachment. Find out what to do to keep yourself safe.
Honda Recalls 400,000 Cars Because the Wheels Might Fall Off
Automotive recalls are commonplace, but the accessories we buy for our cars are sometimes faulty too. While they may not always come to mind when someone mentions mechanical issues, add-on recalls aren’t unusual and should be addressed promptly. Sometimes these things are inconveniences, but when it comes to critical “extras” like tires or wheels, the recalls are just as serious as any standard vehicle recall. Recently the National Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced that hundreds of thousands of Honda vehicles are unsafe due to potential wheel detachment. If yours is on the list, you’ll need to get it fixed as soon as possible.
Why Is There a Wheel Recall?
According to the NHTSA brief, “a manufacturing error may allow the wheels to detach from the vehicle.” Faulty wheels can be deadly, “as wheel detachment can cause a loss of control, increasing the risk of a crash or injury.” While the mental image of wheels flying off your car and rolling down the road might feel like something out of a cartoon, the danger is unfortunately all too real. If you’re impacted, aim to schedule the necessary repairs on your vehicle as quickly as possible.
Which Vehicles Are Impacted?
Per the announcement, Honda is recalling over 400,000 18-inch aluminum alloy wheels that were sold as accessories for the:
- 2016 Civic
- 2017 Civic
- 2018 Civic
- 2019 Civic
- 2020 Civic
- 2021 Civic
If you have a Honda Civic from any of these years, keep an eye on your mailbox. Honda will be mailing out owner letters in early December 2025. And until you know for sure if your vehicle poses a threat, exercise caution. Avoid driving it whenever possible.
Is There a Fix Yet?
The NHTSA reports that “dealers will inspect the wheels and replace the hubs and wheels as necessary, free of charge.” So once you’ve gotten your owner letter, make an appointment to get the wheels serviced at your earliest possible convenience. You don’t want to run the risk of wheel detachment.
If you have further questions, you can reach Honda’s customer service at 1-888-234-2138. Their number for this recall is MMZ. As of November 6, 2025, you can also look up your VIN on the NHTSA site to see if your vehicle is involved in any way. You can also reach the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
