To make this job even safer, screw a piece of 1/4-inch thick Lexan—an extra-hard, transparent polycarbonate plastic—to the top of your featherboard so it extends over the board you’re sawing. This ensures the board will stay flat on the table and tight against the fence as it goes through the blade.

P.S. Your feather-board has to be the same thickness as the boards you’re cutting.

P.P.S.: Plywood that’s 3/8 in. thick will work in place of the Lexan—you just won’t be able to see through it to check the contact tension between the featherboard fingers and the board you’re sawing.
