Greasy solution for an annoying problem

A dollop of plumber's grease is the best bet for curing the squealing that eventually develops on older, outdoor frost-proof faucets.

Disassembly and lubrication

Outdoor frost-proof faucets eventually develop a squeal when you turn the handle. The brass stem threads are rubbing against the brass threads in the housing. If there's a shutoff valve for the faucet, close it. Otherwise, shut off the main valve. To get rid of the squeal, apply a dollop of plumber’s grease.
