Oh, I wish I had read this before I hired a contractor to make a new countertop! Two things I learned from this experience: (1) Matte finish is the way to go for another reason—glossy highlights imperfections in the sub base of the countertop. (2) Do not choose a laminate from the contractor's collection of samples. It is most likely outdated. Go directly to the supplier and look at a sheet of what they currently offer.

How did I not think of scratching the laminate sample to see actual performance of colors and finishes. Thanks so much for the idea!
It will make selection so much easier.
