Great Goofs: Auto Accident

Be sure to anchor shelves in studs

Auto accident

A good friend of mine decided it was time to clean up the garage and get rid of all those boxes on the floor so he could get the car in. He installed a big shelf just high enough so he could get the front end of his wife's car under it. He picked up some plastic anchors, screws and brackets at the hardware store and got to work anchoring the brackets into the plaster walls. When the shelf was hung, he loaded it up with all the boxes and a bunch of clay pots. Soon after he pulled the car in, there was a loud crash. His wife came out to see all the contents of the shelf on top of her shiny hood. Gerald doesn't do shelves anymore. - Alan J. Dunn
