Fence Post Repair

Remove a rotten fence post quickly and easily with a shovel and sledge.

Problem: Rotting fence post

If you have a rotting fence post that needs replacement, here's how to get the concrete pier out of the ground.

It's not complicated, but you'll definitely work up a sweat. First, dig a semicircular hole the same depth as the concrete, around one side of the pier. Make the hole large enough so you can get a good swing at the concrete with a sledgehammer. When about half the concrete is broken off, you and a helper should be able to lift the post out of the hole. Sometimes the post breaks off during lifting. In that case, tie a rope around the pier to lift it out.

Better yet...use a pick axe to dig around the concrete. Don't need to go all the way down. Then wrap a tow strap around the concrete and hook it up to your truck/SUV and rip it out. Save hours of back/hand breaking labor and digging! Just did it last week to replace 5 of my fence posts.
