How to Build a Workbench: Super Simple $50 Bench

This workbench is simple enough and cheap enough that you can make it in a morning, and yet it's big enough for serious woodworking and hobby projects. Add pegboard, a bench vise and a few other accessories and you'll have a serious work center.

Buy the wood and start cutting

This sturdy 30-in. x 6-ft.-long workbench is the ultimate in simplicity. It’s made from only fifteen 8-ft.-long 2x4s and one sheet of 1/2-in. plywood. Follow the cutting diagrams to cut the parts: Figure B to cut the plywood tops, then Figure C to cut all the framing. Use the lengths provided in the Cutting List (see Additional Information below). You can either screw the framing together with 3-in. screws or hand- or power-nail it together with 3-in. nails. Screw the plywood down with 1-5/8-in. screws.

To make these project plans even easier to follow, we tinted the parts that get added at each step.

Figure B: Plywood Cutting Diagram

Figure C: 2 x 4 Usage Diagram

Construction and Cutting Details

All the dimensions and pieces are shown in Figures A, B and C, and keyed to the Cutting List in Additional Information (below). All together you'll need fifteen 2 x 4 x 8s and one sheet of 1/2-in. plywood.

Accessorize it!

I cut this bench down to 5ft to meet my space needs and extended the peg board height to 4ft. Gonna mount my light a little different so i can still use the shelf on top of the peg board. Materials were not 50.00 in my area though. Cost was a little over 100.00. Love it!

@pfbrd1969- The 2x4 dimensions are located on the "cutting list". There is a link towards the bottom of the home page of this DIY. Here it is as well: http://hostedmedia.reimanpub.com/TFH/Attachments/FH09SEP_SIMWOR_CL.pdf

Cheers

This DIY was great. I omitted the upper portion for space reasons but added a smaller table for my particular needs (I am utilizing this as a home brewing station as well).

Great little project that I was able to involve my 10 yr, old daughter. Little more than $50, and had to get two pounds of 3" screws, but makes a huge difference in my shop. I customized the plan a bit - put two 2x4's between "top legs" about 8" down from top shelf - and covered with a thin piece of plywood I had. Neat little shelf to keep screws, etc. in. Thank Family Handyman!

I built this bench (actually, two of them) right after it was published in the magazine. It cost closer to $90.00 each for the materials locally, but the best money I ever spent. I built two them over a weekend, with a total of about 7 or 8 hours, including adding some extras. After I got them built, I put them back-to-back in my garage/shop. One side faces the shop area and other faces the garage area. Lights, power strips and pegboard are on both of them. I also put 1/8" tempered masonite (drilled and tacked) on the bench surface for easy replacement in the future - I know how hard I am on bench surfaces! With the benches back-to-back, that gives a nice surface on top to store some of my camping gear. Great project.

I would like to start this project. However the plans dont say how far the spacing is for the assembly of the shelves . Can anyone help me please? Also where can I find the video for this assembly online? Any help would be great thank you .

Need Plans - Very useful looking project

October 24, 5:16 PM [GMT -5]

My father built a large shed in his back yard several years ago and then he and my mom stuffed it with junk. After he passed away last Spring I went back home for the summer to take care of the home maintenance that he couldn't do because of his illness. (COPD--and he never smoked, it might have been a result of his professional hardwood floor-finishing gigs, so, always use a respirator!)

Anyway, in the process, I found some 1-1/2 hardwood plywood that he had stored away for something, and used it for the top and a shelf to a similar workbench for the shed. It is very sturdy, and the thick plywood top is almost indestructible. I put it together with screws and wood glue.

As a solution for warped stock, I used clamps, jacks and shipping straps to bend the warped boards back into shape and them screwed-and-glued them into place. It has held up nicely. Good project; everyone should have a sturdy workbench.

What can I find the length/height of the 2 x 4?

October 03, 12:17 PM [GMT -5]

It cost closer to 90, I did get a 3/4 inch top. I started at 10:30 AM and took a 1 hour lunch. I finished up around 3:30. Its a great stury bench. You could not even come close to buying one that nice in the store for the price.

Cost for materials was about 90 dollars and it took me an entire weekend to assemble but this was my first project ever so bear that in mind. It' a nice bench and I'll be building a couple more of them to complete my shop. A tutorial on how to purchase good 2x4s would be nice as I had several problems due to warped/bad lumber.

September 03, 5:20 PM [GMT -5]

Just finished. Took closer to 4 hours, not 2, but I was alone for most of the assembly which slowed me down. I rented a framing nailer and used that to put it together rather than the screws, it made it much more doable as a solo project. It ended up as a craft bench for my wife so instead of pegboard it has a big whiteboard and LED lighting instead of fluorescent.

I built this over the weekend and it is the best $50 investment I have made to my shed! thanks for the plans!!

Good bench for my small basement. I put the power strip below to keep the cords out of the way and the peg board all the way up, but only 3/4 of the way across and put in 2 shelves, for glue, screws, and stuff.

Fantastic easy project. I completed it a couple of years ago and use the workbench everyday.
