One thing that I do when doing the second coat of joint compound is to mix in some type of colorant (plumb chalk, food dye) in small amounts.
I can then skim over the areas and see where my low and high spots are very quickly.

I am a professional painter and I am always looking for tips. Your hand lamp is an excellent tip. I hate it when I finish my prep and start painting and I find a significant flaw in the wall.

I use a dustless sander for sanding drywall. can find them in home depot or online, go to www.dustlessdrywallsander.com or google vacuu-sponge
