This is precisely the method I've been using for years for numerous trim rehab projects. It works very well and I love the 'wipe-on poly', although I use cotton stain pads already made up from Home Depot and they work great. One additional tip - when you begin mixing stains to match your job needs - RECORD the final stain mix so you will be able to duplicate if you need more, now or later. :-)
