Thanks for the confirmations. We bought a 20 year old house last January (2011), and replaced all the kitchen appliances, but I had a feeling the 2 water heaters (they were a bigger family, I think ours [of 3] only need one) and furnace were probably ready to be replaced as well... At least the air conditioner unit outside is new.

Guess I know where my tax refund next year is going :)

The article about Energy Star fridge purchase says that the energy savings over a 15 year period may just about pay for the new fridge. I have a hard time accepting an ROI of 15 years for a residential purchase. 5 years maybe, and then what about the environmental cost of scrapping the 8 year old fridge? Not a good call in my opinion.
