I have a 6X6 rough sawn post that is rotten 1 ft up from bottom from water. Do I have to replace the entire post (complicated do to the way the cross beam was tied in) or can you add a new 1' section; glue and dowel, etc

The pressure treatment chemicals used on common pressure treated lumber contain metals. Screws are also metal - the problem is, they are not the same, which sets up an elctro/chemical corrosion process - galvanic corrosion. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Galvanic_corrosion Use hardware designated for use on PTL or stainless. Galvanized is good too for larger bolts, etc.

Can you add your comments about pressure treated lumber and the effects on hardware? I heard that treated lumber deteriorated bolts and deck screws that are not special treated. Just yesterday I was taken apart crating material made out of treated lumber that was sitting around for years. The zinc bolts looked like old rusted chewed nails.

My 28X16' deck is missing the flashing over the ledger boards. The problem is - my deck boards don't run parallel to the house (as shown), but are perpendicular. I want to flash it, but don't want to pull up all 64+ of those 16 footers! Anyone got any ideas? I've considered cutting off two board widths from the ends of the deck boards that abut the house, and then running new "border" deck boards parallel to the house/ledge adter flashing it. This would require a bit of new structure below in the joists, but seems very do-able... Looking for any hints anyone might have.
