How to Build Retaining Walls Stronger

Good Article. I will be fixing a wall I built 6 years ago that ran into the problem of back pressure (Fig. E). I had gutters run through a pipe to drain outside the wall, but ran into a problem when the gutters clogged at the junction to the piping with leaves and all the water off my roof ran into the inside of my retaining wall. SO, I will be doing this again. Thanks for the tips for this time!

I will be building A railroad tie retaining wall. It will be between 4&5 feet high and around 100 feet long. It is a mowable slope. There will need to be 2-3 more walls above this added later. I need to know what is the rule of thumb for how many feet should be between deadmen and every how many layers.

I just built a LARGE retaining wall (65' x 7'). I had a lot of backfil room (about 40 tons of Road Gravel). Now, in the morning (regardless of rain) some random rows have one to two inches of wet area, as if water is draining through the cracks of the wall.

I don't understand why it is an even one to two inch area along several blocks, that inconsistently appear.

Any ideas?

I'm going to build a retaining wall but I want to know how to do it first. I was looking for this type of information!!! It seems other internet sites (even DIY sites) like to keep this info a secret.

We are done excavating are just getting started on our retaining wall and this article had lots of helpful information and great illustrations. The part on proper drainage was especially helpful. I know our project will be a success thanks to this article!
