blutopaz - We like our fence a lot. In fact we built a second one shortly after finishing the first. They've held up well over the years. We're in Minnesota so lots of weather variation. We built a 3rd section across the back of the yard this summer. And the reason I'm out here is we plan to build a 4th starting this weekend. Just coming out to look at the materials list. The design was modified slightly for the back sections by adding 2 spindles to each of the 3 groups of spindles(so 11 instead of 9). This lengthens each section a bit but is still short enough to use the 2x12 cross members. Only difference in material is another 2 2x4/10's to make extra spindles and the top 1x's need to be 14 ft instead of 12.

jrn23, how is your structure holding up? What part of the country are you in? We're thinking of building something similar to act a a shade from the west sun on the back of our house. We'll be putting the uprights in at an angle to block the sun. Just wondering how you like the one you built. Thanks, blutopaz......

This is a great DIY project for the summer. Thank you for the help!

Should mention that there is a slight miscalculation in the materials list though. If you plan to get 2x4x10 boards to rip your pickets you'll only need 7 or 8 10ft boards, not the 14 that the plan calls for. You'll need 27 vertical spindles and some leftover for the top caps. So 8 10ft boards are more than enough.

Just finished building one of these this past weekend and it turned out wonderfully. Have already gotten numerous complements from neighbors and those passing by. It turned out so well I think I 'll need to build another one.
