To Roger; I would put wore nuts on the wires, and also wrap electrical tape over the wire nuts. Be sure to put a solid cover over the box

I want to replace the hard-wired smoke alarms that are about 15 years old with NON hard-wired, battery smoke detectors. Even though I was replacing the battery backup with new 9V batteries annually, they would still start beeping during the night or day. Batteries tested out fine. Can I just remove and put wire nuts on the old wires? roger
