Great project. I was a bit nervous doing it myself. But the directions provided worked well. Only thing I ended up changing was the adhesive to join the main rail with the angled. I originally used the epoxy which failed 2 days latere. My son was pulling on it (just like the picture) and it poped apart. So, ended up using 2 small wood biscuits and good old fashion wood glue. Very strong. Would recommend going that route first.

followed this to a T. cut the rail support pieces (the 2x4 @16 degrees) before the handrail - that way you don't have to guess on the rail itself (saving wood) and the shorter 2x4 is easier to move between the saw and rail placement. my angle wsa 20 degrees.

Overall, good advice. On the final step of installing the short return, be careful when pounding in the finishing nails! The wall can be damaged by the rail return. I suggest using a larger bit instead of the 1/16" bit, and put the nail running parallel to the rail FIRST!
