I have been successful using wheel carriages from under old office chairs to adapt my tools to and have overcome the "small" shop situation and made my tools mobile, as well. The female conncecting piece on the chair is just the right ID for using rigid electical conduit to extend to desired height. Got pix if you want to see them.

Used the air compressor idea for a few years. Great for getting up and out of the way. Only caveat is you have to climb a ladder in order to adjust your pressure settings, which can be a pain. Otherwise worked well.
