I'm no expert, so to ensure a level surface when building up the 1/2" of cement on the wire lath cut 1/2 strips of pine or plywood in whatever length you need, e.g. 6' or 8' is common. Attach them 16" or 24" apart with a finish nailer. This will guide you to make sure the first coat you put on is an even 1/2" all across the area you are covering.you can even use them to "screed" to 1/2: depth. When dry, remove the strips and fill in w/ the same mortar mix.
