I've been a trim carpenter for more than 35 years, though my preference is to cope the joints, 45 degree joints are fine for the beginner. On suggestion I might make is to go 44 to 44.5 degrees on the joints, which lets the front face of the molding close up, usually w/ 45 degree joints nailed onto sheetrock, the buildup in the corners because of joint compound keeps the corners from being square. I also like the picture frame molding underneath the chair railing for a more elegant look. Step it up another notch by adding Crossheads above your doors and window. http://www.overthetopdoortrim.com
