I recently did pretty much exactly the same thing. If you have a bunch that are similar, you may be able to fabricate a plug rather than relying entirely on wood filler. Cut it about to size, glue it in place, and then you can add the filler over that. I suppose that much depends on how visible the icky looking parts are. I just recently did this for my Father, and that was exactly what I needed to do. I used chisels rather than a rotary tool; the tool is probably faster.

mine can't be fixed that way :-( some are 1/4" or more off. I've had to take the strike plate off, use a rotary tool to make the hole bigger, use wood filler, and carve out a new place to put the strike plate. I was hoping to find an easy solution when I clicked here!
