Very informative. I had no idea what the acronym, PCV, meant and its function. Now, I do. Thanks. My conversation with my mechanic regarding oil changes will be forever different from this point forward. Again, thanks.

A clogged or sticky PCV will, in newer cars, cause that "check engine" light to come on. So, paying attention to this little item can save you time, money and panic if serviced regularly. But, PCV's can be cleaned. Oil sludge build up can be broken down and blown out using a can of carb cleaner. Take it outside and (with rubber gloves on) spray it out in both directions until you hear it that the mechanism inside moves freely (clicks when shaken). I check mine semi-annually.
